Sustainable Suburbia

Sustainable Suburbia was a pilot study commissioned by the HCA (now Homes England) during the period the government was considering a family of new towns in the Healthy Towns initiative. The study strove to explore the concept of maintaining, or even increasing, density of housing at the edge of settlement and the role of integrated green infrastructure in delivering walkable-living homes which have a sense of community, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change.

M+A worked alongside Sir Richard McCormack to develop the principles of the sustainable suburbia study as the antithesis to the Healthy Towns initiative. M+A provided case studies and worked examples of how even dense developments (circa 50-75 dwellings per hectare) can accommodate up to 20% public open space and still provide private gardens for residents. The integration of flood protection, SUDS, rainwater harvesting, biodiversity, play and civic space have led to the development of an important model for social cohesion and sustainable living for future housing.
