Based on our reputation for innovative and sustainable solutions for challenging environments, McAlpines’ invited M+A to join the international team bidding for the design and build contract for a major oncology extension to Bermuda’s only hospital – King Edward II. Our bid was successful and the team went on to complete the design stages.
The impact of regular hurricanes created an extraordinary design constraint for all external detailing and the scarcity of fresh water in Bermuda ensured that the sustainable drainage strategy shaped the landscape masterplanning. Along with water management, the re-use of locally sourced substrate materials and transplantation of over 100 trees, the project is a showcase for green roof construction as the first building to provide accessible living roofs on the island. The roof terrace was detailed as a horizontal cladding system to mitigate against hurricane winds and the design was inspired by the island’s geological formations through ‘sliding planes’. Striving for a fully integrated design, pockets of space are created as the ‘plane’ shifts, mirroring the façade projections.
