Cathedral Plaza is Worcester’s newest city square and a prime example of meaningful public realm design by M+A. Repatriating the Cathedral to the city, the simple and elegant design was inspired by the composer Edward Elgar – one of Worcester’s most famous children – whose statue is located on the square.
The final design was based on the abstraction of the musical score of Elgar’s famous The Dream of Gerontius, first performed in the Cathedral. Maintaining Cathedral views and delivering flexible, programmable ‘event’ space were key objectives for the masterplan. Planning permission was granted and construction completed in 2016.
