M+A joined forces with a world-class design team in the competition for Binhai Airport’s expansion as part of Beijing Olympics’ development programme. Headed up by NACO, renowned Dutch masterplanners, and airport specialists KPF Architects New York, the team delivered an inspiring concept receiving unanimous approval from the International Olympic Committee as the winning scheme.

According to local folklore, the kite was born in Tianjin. Celebrating this, the air terminal buildings were conceived to give the illusion of floating with boarding gates flowing out like kite tails. The Chinese fan, as a recognisable cultural form, inspired the wider masterplan using efficient geometry for modular and expandable transport circulation with the radial design creating an efficient parking layout.
