TECHNOLOGY BUILDING TO DRIVE INNOVATION

The University of Portsmouth has submitted plans for a 12,340 sqm Technology Building, which will unite the Faculty of Technology in a purpose-built facility at the heart of the campus.

Scheduled for completion in 2028, it will provide flexible spaces for teaching, research, and innovation, including specialist labs for AI, cybersecurity, energy, and advanced manufacturing.

Sustainability drives the design, with the building targeting BREEAM Outstanding certification, operating entirely on electricity, and utilising advanced digital systems to optimise energy use and environmental quality.

Set within a tight urban context, the scheme was carefully integrated into the existing townscape and circulation patterns. Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDs) were a key consideration, with all surface water run-off managed on-site. This required close coordination with civil and architectural teams to develop effective solutions across constrained, multi-level sites.

Following an extensive consultation process with the local authority, the proposals have now been submitted for planning, with a decision expected soon. This marks an exciting first step in delivering high-quality, future-ready facilities that will benefit not only the university community but the wider city of Portsmouth.
