ROM VALLEY QUARTER

Macfarlane + Associates have been appointed by Impact Developments Romford 1 Ltd. to work alongside Ethos Architects in creating a residential led, mixed use masterplan and planning application for the 10 ha former Rom Valley Ice Rink site in Romford, Havering.

The new proposals could see the formerly consented scheme increase in units and uses, with a focus on inter-generational community living, mixed tenure, placemaking and new east-west green links that better connect the hospital with the town centre. The team is currently in the process of negotiating with Havering Council with regards to the proposals.

Landscape is fundamental to the project; creating accessible new green connections, incorporating a variety of ecological interventions, helping to improve local air quality and a healthier environment. The concept proposes a sustainable drainage system using ecological engineering methods, such as bioswale planting and street-level rain gardens, to avoid surface flooding and store water. The project features increased green infrastructure – tree planting, community gardens and wildlife habitats – to help create a ‘sense of place’ for the community and encourage more people to visit the Low Line.
