LEATHAM’S, SOUTH BERMONDSEY – FOOD FOR LIFE
The project is within one of Southwark’s key regeneration areas; Old Kent Road (the headquarters and distribution warehouse of Leathams since 1995). Leatham’s was an independent family food distributing business, providing ingredients to the food industry and has been in the trade since 1980. However, they have outgrown their current location and are looking to move the trade to new purpose-built facilities closer to the M25.
The development goal is to create an architecturally rich and robust building which will strengthen and celebrate the area’s industrial character with a landscape that can correspond well with that design.
The varied uses of the proposal reflect Southwark’s ambition to evoke growth in homes and jobs as the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan Dec 2017 (OKR AAP).
We are developing the proposals for the public realm, residential podium gardens and upper terraces/roofs associated with this mixed-use development and will: create an inviting and motivating environment for the residents, workers and the local community; provide 900m2 of new public realm, nearly 1,500m2 of communal amenity space and nearly 800m2 of children’s playable space; create areas of planting on podium level with areas of habitat, such as nesting boxes for bats and birds on an ecological terrace.
