Holyrood Street Kiosk

The Holyrood Street Kiosk is a vibrant addition to London Bridge, aimed at transforming a quiet street into a lively cultural destination. With a focus on sustainability and community, the kiosk brings greenery and nature to the area, creating a welcoming space for locals and visitors. The initiative enhances the street’s identity and promotes local businesses, while fostering social interaction and providing a much-needed connection to nature in the heart of the city. Its impactful design makes it a key part of the broader vision to revitalise the area and improve public spaces.

Under the umbrella of the Low Line, a public competition run by Southwark Council in 2019 called for ideas for meanwhile uses for a leftover triangular site on Holyrood Street (originally used as a bin store), and for a vision & masterplan for the whole street. The kiosk is an exemplar of temporary interventions comprising a garden, a public space, a green roof and wall system, and a semi-permanent kiosk building itself, being used to test a new use for an awkward piece of land and through this, facilitate a change in public perception of the street.
Given its size, it exemplifies a “swiss-army knife” approach to land use, showcasing the way in which landscape, green infrastructure & public realm projects can positively contribute towards a greener and more carbon-conscious future.
As a Civic Trust award winner in 2023, the Holyrood Street Kiosk embodies an approach to holistic urban regeneration which is sustainable in every facet of its design.
